Westchester, Rockland restaurants where you can celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month

The Lower Hudson Valley's vibrant, multi-ethnic and multi-racial Latino population makes our area a hub for all kinds of food. But just because a spot is Latino-owned doesn't mean it only serves Latin food. Many owners also operate Italian eateries, seafood spots, American restaurants, steakhouses and more.

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. and celebrates the contributions of Americans tracing their roots to Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean, we've compiled a small taste of Rockland and Westchester restaurants with Latin roots that you can support. Their fare includes Cuban croquettas (Croqueteria in Sleepy Hollow), Mexican street food (Nyack's El Cuñao), Salvadorean pupusas (Rincon Salvadoreño in Port Chester) and Spanish breakfast steak (Fire & Cork in Blauvelt).

Keep in mind this is a sampling — there are a lot of Latino-owned restaurants in the Lower Hudson — but if you have a fave that's missing we'll gladly add. Email JRMuchnick@gannett.com.
