Bobby Harris, co-owner of The Barley House in Thornwood, Barley on the Hudson in Tarrytown and the Barley Beach House in Rye, wasn't the only lower Hudson Valley resident to meet Baseball Hall of Fame legend Yankee Derek Jeter Feb. 9 in Miami.

Joanne Ottaviano, president of the Piermont Civic Association in Piermont, also did.

The two were part of Optimum’s partnership with Jeter to celebrate its Greatest Offer of All Time. In an online contest, the company invited Optimum customers and small business owners to share how they're making a positive difference in their community and how they act as leaders, mentors, and role models.

In other words, "GOATs."

Harris and Ottaviano filled out the contest form and won, getting a free trip to Miami, meet and greets with Jeter, and $1,000 each from Optimum to donate to a charity of their choice (Ottaviano picked SNARR Northeast, Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, while Harris selected Feeding Westchester).

According to Harris, the whole experience was "absolutely amazing from start to finish!"

"The event was small and intimate so we actually had real time to talk and hang with Derek Jeter," he said. "Being surrounded by the other nine winners was also a treat. It was so great to learn about other people’s contributions to their communities. I was able to have a few casual conversations with Derek and even made him laugh.

"It was a childhood dream come true."

The Derek Jeter Community GOAT contest ran from November 1 through December 11, 2023, and recognized 10 Optimum customers committed to supporting their communities through their individual efforts and contributions.

Other winners hailed from Arizona, the Bronx, New Jersey and West Virginia.
