How are we doing after that episode, Game of Thrones fans? We’d been warned for some time that this accurately-named third episode of the final season, ‘The Long Night’, was going to mess us up, and it did not disappoint. While the lead character body count ended up being lower than a lot of fans predicted – this was no Red Wedding – several fan favorites did meet their end tonight, and one of the most devastating losses was Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey).

Lyanna has been beloved ever since her season five introduction, when she became the first person to declare Jon Snow the King in the North. And tonight, she became one of the first fighters to die in the battle against the Night King’s army. After throwing herself headlong into the fight, she was seized up by a wight – which, by the way, just never get any less horrifying close up – which summarily crushed her to death. And yet, even as this was happening, she retained her status as a badass and stabbed the monster right in the eye. As heartbreaking as her death was, she died a hero.

Unsurprisingly, fans were all over Twitter trying to process this loss, and praising Lyanna as the bad bitch she was to the end.

Even after the episode was over – and we’d lost a whole lot more favorites, including Lyanna’s cousin, Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) and Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) – Lyanna’s death remained one of the standout moments. Even more upsettingly, Ramsey returned later in the episode when Lyanna was reanimated as a wight, along with all of the battle’s other bodies up to that point.
