If you couldn’t get enough of the velvet bow trend on your Christmas tree this holiday season, this easy napkin folding hack is the perfect way to bring the theme straight to your dining table. The fold is straightforward and a great way to add a holiday accent that won't take too much time.

The simple fold, demonstrated by @register_boulevard on Instagram, uses a napkin folded into a thin rectangle to create a bow shape. The Instagram user crosses each end of the napkin into a loop before sliding a napkin ring onto one end.

By pulling a loop tail through the ring, she creates a picture-perfect holiday bow for the table.

How to Recreate the Hack

Before attempting to fold the bow, make sure the beginning rectangle fold lays as flat as possible. If you’re working with a small or fragile napkin ring, you’ll want to be able to slide it onto the tail end of the bow without forcing it.

  1. The center of the ring will still need to fit an additional section of napkin inside before the bow is complete. To achieve a perfect fold, working with thinner, ironed napkins is the best way to go.

  2. The creator of this hack starts with a triangle fold, folds down the top section of the napkin, and creates the rectangular shape by folding twice more at the bottom. This keeps the open edges of the napkin tucked away so it doesn’t come undone during the bow process, but still helps the napkin to lay flat so there’s no trouble adding the napkin ring.

  3. The best part about these bows is that they don’t require a specific napkin size to perfect the fold. The bow itself uses very little fabric, so even a smaller square napkin will work for this trick.

Whether you’re trying to spruce up neutral napkins or want to match the bows on your table to the ones on your tree, this folding trick is an easy way to elevate your dining table for the holiday season.

More Folding Tricks to Try

If you’re truly dedicated to the napkin-folding game and want one more complex fold to upgrade your holiday decor, you can create a detailed napkin tree with user @rhb1_interior_designs.

Starting with a folded square cloth napkin, he layers several triangle folds to create a diamond shape before tucking each layer into the layer above. This trick will definitely impress your guests (although it might take a second for them to undo the fold).

Believe it or not, the holiday tree fold is actually possible on a paper napkin, since it utilizes folds that hold the napkin in place without a napkin ring. The thinner material also works well for this trick since it requires so many folds tucked into one another.

Completing a paper napkin tree takes a little bit of practice to achieve, but even plain white party napkins can provide some extra holiday cheer with this trick.
