  • Margot Robbie will bring Barbie to life in a live-action movie.

  • While most details are still under wraps, we know that big-time Oscar alums are set to helm the project.

As if she didn't already juggle a ton of jobs—she's been a firefighter, director, scientist, nurse, astronaut, game developer, and president—Barbie's adding another stint to her resume: Hollywood actress. Yes, the iconic toy known for inspiring children to do it all is coming to life on the big screen. A collaboration between Warner Bros. and Mattel (the company that makes Barbie), the live-action Barbie movie is slated for 2020, at least according to an IMDb entry. And we have everything you need to know about the larger-than-life adaptation, below.

Who will play Barbie in the live-action movie?

Margot Robbie, the Australian actress who became a household name after starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street, is set to bring the plastic doll to life.

"Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child's journey to self-discovery," said Robbie, who is also a producer on the film, in an interview with Variety. "I'm so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide."

Blond and beautiful, the look-alike seems like the obvious and perfect fit. But, actually, Robbie wasn't the first choice. According to IndieWire, the role was originally promised to comedian Amy Schumer, who was also tasked with writing the script. However, due to scheduling conflicts, the I Feel Pretty actress dropped out.

But back to Robbie. After snagging an Oscar nomination for her transformative role as the polarizing titular ice skater in 2017's I, Tonya, she secured her spot as Harley Quinn, and has three subsequent Suicide Squad projects in the works. Not to mention she's starring in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, out July 26, as Sharon Tate, the model/actress who fell victim to the Manson Family. Needless to say, Robbie is busier than...Barbie.

How old is Barbie in her movie?

Though Barbie the toy just celebrated her 60th birthday, Barbie the character—with nary a wrinkle—is decidedly younger. And even though she's been featured in close to 40 films and a Netflix series, an exact age is difficult to nail down.

But based on the fact that Barbie is a working professional, has been shattering glass ceilings for years, and has the funds to support a lavish Malibu Dream House lifestyle, we're going to go out on a limb and say that to her, age is nothing but a number. Though at 28, we'd also say Robbie fits the bill.

Who will write the script for the Barbie movie?

Hang onto your ponytails; it’s about to get exciting. After a stalled production, actress-turned-director Greta Gerwig and her real-life Ken, indie film mainstay Noah Baumbach, have signed on to pen the Barbie script.

Proving there's strength in quirk, the pair have worked together on several indie successes, including Frances Ha and Mistress America. The live-action Barbie would mark the first big-studio venture for the pair, who have solidified their deal with Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter. But we'll just have to wait and see how much of their signature offbeat eccentricity they inject into their adventure comedy.

The logical next question: Who will direct?

THR reports that Gerwig has been "eyeing the director's chair." With Gerwig pulling the strings, we imagine that Barbie will be a capital F feminist, and super progressive.

Nominated for Best Director for Lady Bird in 2018, Gerwig has another busy awards season in front of her, as her adaptation of Little Women hits theaters this Christmas.

What will the Barbie film be about?

Plot details remain a question mark. According to the film's IMDb page, the story will follow Barbie out of Barbieland and into the real world, as she is expelled for not being perfect enough.

This could mean we're in for a partially animated film, with toons sharing the screen with their 3D counterparts á la Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Another theory? That the plot will change entirely to fit its new leading lady. Just like Barbie's second act, the possibilities are endless.

Stay tuned to learn more, like who will play Ken, who will play Skipper, and who will do the music. Any votes for dance-pop group Aqua?
