We're Experiencing a Wallpaper Renaissance—and Digital Printing Is to Thank

If you’ve become more invested in decorating your home, you’re not alone. According to reports by global research company Technavio, the market for wall decor (and specifically digitally-printed wallpaper) is expected to see massive growth over the next few years. So if changing out your custom peel-and-stick wallpaper with every season sounds like your ideal way to live, expect the options to be vast.
In Technavio’s research on the digitally-printed wallpaper market, the company expects a growth of $4.81 billion by 2025. A driving trend behind that? The popularity of custom wallpaper “because of its ability to provide the exact look and feel desired by consumers,” according to the report.
Not only that, but digitally printed wallpaper gives customers more options—that are both flexible and detailed—from retailers and manufacturers. That’s one of the main reasons heritage brand York Wallcoverings was an early investor in digital printing solutions, Gina Shaw, vice president of product development for the manufacturer, tells House Beautiful. “It allows us to develop small batches and test market interest in a complex pattern or style, then print the wallcoverings our consumers love most at a mass scale using our larger, traditional presses,” she says.
Digital printing, among other techniques, was specifically used in York Wallcoverings and Rifle Paper Co.’s latest peel-and-stick collection to “enhance the variety of colors and intricate details in hand-painted designs,” Anna Bond, Rifle Paper Co. co-founder and CCO, says. The technique also allowed the brand to create its first large-scale, peel-and-stick wallpaper mural and helps it have a quicker response to customer demand for new designs.
