Who Went Home and Who Made It Through to the Top 3 Tonight on ‘American Idol’

It was time for American Idol to celebrate the magic of Disney with performances by the Top 5 taken from movies and TV shows from the Disney songbook. For the first time in Idol history, each contestant sang two songs last night: one classic and one from more recent releases.

In addition, there were two special performances outside of the competition: First, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles opened the show with a special rendition of "When You Wish Upon a Star." Then later, Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel in the upcoming live-action version of The Little Mermaid, performed "Part of Your World."

This week saw the return of the normal judging panel with Luke Bryan being rejoined at the judges table by Lionel Richie and Katy Perry now that the two have returned from the coronation for King Charles III.

In addition, Sofia Carson, who has appeared in several Disney productions, served as the mentor for the Top 5: Colin Stough, Iam Tongi, Megan Danielle, Wé Ani, and Zachariah Smith.

Then America voted and the Top 3 heading into next week’s finale were revealed.

Luke: “Great performance. I don’t think you’ve hit a bad note all year.”

Zachariah Smith

Katy: “Wow! Listen, you actually may become king. To me, you were the underdog. Look at you now. One week away. I love when you don’t think about it and just embody it and let your body spaz out.”

Colin Stough
Song: “Real Gone" from Cars

Luke: “We’ve been wanting you to get real comfortable all year. I didn’t realize a car song would do it. You let loose. Great song choice. That was maybe my favorite performance you’ve done.”

Megan Danielle
Song: “You Can't Stop the Girl” by Bebe Rexha from Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Lionel: “Do you have any idea how good you are?” That was a stellar performance. Your voice went to another level. That high note you hit was amazing.”

Katy: “I think that was the most you’ve ever stretched your vocals. Your confidence is on another level. It was beautiful to watch.”

Katy: “Wow. I feel like you were giving everybody their own performance. You really drew us in. You controlled it so well. It was like that time you had that moment. You are growing before our eyes."

Lionel: “There are a lot of things we can coach you on but you either have stage presence or you don’t.”

Megan Danielle

Luke: “So effortless. Always in the pocket. God gave it to you when you were born. You've got the magic tone and the magic delivery. I love your voice. It tells a story every time you sing.”

Lionel: “So you have to understand something. There is a time in your life when magic happens and my friend, this is magical. This is the time when all the stars aligned. It is really happening.”

Katy: “I believe it is written in the stars and I don’t believe in coincidences. When I look at your name, Iam, I see I am the next American Idol.”

American Idol returns on Sunday, May 21 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC for the reveal of the next American Idol.
