Wellfleet Restaurant Week celebrates 15 years. Here are the dining specials and events.

On the Wednesday after Memorial Day, the town of Wellfleet’s culinary creativity shines for a whole week as Wellfleet’s Restaurant Week begins.

This year, the Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 15th year of hosting the event, which runs from May 29 to June 4. Sponsors include Sysco, North Coast, Seamen’s Bank, We Need a Vacation, Cape Cod Five Bank, Ring Bros MarketPlace and Z.R. Frazier Excavation and Construction.

“It's really nice for us to be able to have a week dedicated to celebrating all the delicious eateries and Wellfleet when it's not so busy here and the locals can get out and dine at these restaurants,” Brianna Sullivan, executive director of the Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce, said.

During a Chamber board meeting in January 2010, local restaurant owners and board members Todd Barry, owner of Moby Dick’s Restaurant and Diane Hall, owner of Van Rensselaer’s Restaurant and Bar pitched the idea to fellow meeting attendees of starting a local restaurant week, according to Sullivan. Everyone seemed to love the idea and the rest was history.

“Everyone gets ready for Memorial Day weekend, it's like the crazy busy weekend and everyone's staffed but then after the weekend, there's kind of like a (lull) before the real summer busyness starts,” Sullivan said. “They were trying to think of something that could make that time a little busier for everyone.”

Unlike other restaurant weeks where cities mandate restaurants to follow a specific suite, like serving only prix fixe menus, Wellfleet allows its establishments to pick and choose what promotions they run.

Plus, local businesses will also be running specials and hosting events throughout the week as well.

“(We’re trying) different ways to get everyone involved so the whole community can participate,” Sullivan said.
