In case you've blocked out and/or repressed the 2000s due to velour tracksuit-related trauma, it was an undeniably chaotic and iconic era in fashion. An era full of cropped hoodies, visible thongs, layered tank tops, and sweater sets so tight they barely buttoned around our Victoria's Secret bras. A time when hanging your Giga Pet off your belt loop was socially acceptable—if not encouraged—platform flip flops were omnipresent, and the bottom three inches of your bell bottoms were permanently soaked from weird winter puddles you clomped through in Uggs.
The 2000s also blessed us with legendary movies (think: The Notebook, Mean Girls, 13 Going on 30, Coyote Ugly) and TV shows (hi, The OC, Gilmore Girls, and Gossip Girl) where the costume designers were best described as unhinged. (In the best way!!) Like, there were no budgets (at least not on Gossip Girl) and no rules when it came to putting together outfits—and the only directive anyone seemed to follow was Y2K maximalism. Like, I cannot emphasize enough how quiet luxury had not been invented yet.
On that note, check out 40 iconic movie and TV outfits that we'll *never* stop trying to recreate (no, seriously, there's even evidence of dupe sleuthing in here), from Rory's chunky sweater on Gilmore Girls (you know the one) and Andi Anderson's yellow gown in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days to Sandra Bullock's bodycon dress in the makeover scene from Miss Congeniality.
*The* '13 Going on 30' Dress
If you wear a dupe for your 30th bday and your friends don't get it, find new friends. And speaking of dupes, we found one on Amazon for under $25.
Cher and Dion's School 'Fits in 'Clueless'
Before you @ me, yes, Clueless came out in 1995. But its costume design was most influential throughout the '00s and continues to be today. Like, to the point where Cher's yellow mini-skirt suit is still being replicated. No, seriously, hashtag never not stalking Etsy for options.
Lucy Liu's Snatched Leather Skirt Suit in 'Charlie's Angels'
Good morning, Charlie, I want this outfit.
Tyra Banks's Halter Top in 'Coyote Ugly'
Feels like the Y2K fashion renaissance has been sleeping on suede patchwork halter tops, and it's a damn shame.
Rory's Sweater on 'Gilmore Girls'
For me, personally? It's not fall until I've dramatically whipped out my chunky white cable knit Rory Gilmore sweater and wandered around my small town (a.k.a. NYC) with a backpack. And yes, you can get an uncanny $40 dupe right this way on Amazon.
*THE* Dress in 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days'
The fact that yellow does not complement my skin tone has not stopped me from trying to wear replicas of this dress whenever I'm trying to "lose a guy in 10 days" (a.k.a. get someone to date me). PSA: This dupe under $100 absolutely nails the iconic low back.
Regina George's 'A Little Bit Dramatic' Tee in 'Mean Girls'
Bought one for Halloween several years ago (get yours here, you're welcome)...and ended up just, like, wearing it daily in life.
The Makeover Dress in 'Miss Congeniality'
Sandra Bullock's makeover scene from Miss Congeniality is completely iconic, thanks to her Hervé Léger bodycon dress. Real ones cost $$$$, so thank god for replicas like this one (under $30!), tbh.
Raven's Hot Pink Print Tracksuit in 'The Cheetah Girls'
I want to go back to a time when matching your pink gloves to your pink tracksuit, your pink cheetah shirt, your pink cheetah headband, and your pink cheetah scarf, was the height of fashion.
*THE* 'Jennifer's Body' Zip-Up Heart Hoodie
Need ❤️ Now ❤️.
Mandy Moore's Cool Girl Outfit in 'The Princess Diaries'
The way I was so intimidated by the coolness of this outfit when I saw it in 2001.
Bella's Angsty Vibe in 'Twilight'
Like, do I purposefully still use a tangled mess of headphones with a cord just so I can wander around feeling like Bella in Twilight? YOU TELL ME.
(The answer is yes, I do.)
LC's Signature Look on 'The Hills'
Me whenever I wear a super-stretchy white tank top with sunglasses on my head: "I'll always be the girl who didn't go to Paris."
Gabriella's Blue Wrap Sweater in 'High School Musical'
This sweater launched an entire section of my wardrobe devoted to ballerina tops. It was the start of something new, if you will.
Gabrielle Union's Clovers Fits in 'Bring It On'
Since wandering around the world in a recreation of her cheerleading uniform would be somewhat random, go ahead and recreate this flawless cropped zip-up hoodie moment.
Britney Spears in 'Crossroads'
Literally remember asking for "boy short underwear" and a mini tank from poor, long-suffering Santa after this movie came out, and for that, I'd like to apologize to Christmas as a holiday.
Pretty Much Every Outfit in 'Ghost World'
For when you want your sartorial vibe to be "I'm Not Like the Other Girls."
Chuck Bass's Signature Scarf on 'Gossip Girl'
Perhaps only Charles Bartholomew Bass can pull this off, but that doesn't stop us from trying.
THE Blue Dress in 'The Notebook'
If you've always wanted Allie's EXACT blue dress in the hopes that you'd be recreating this moment (probs not with Ryan Gosling, but good luck to you), there are exact replicas on Etsy.
Christina Milian's Denim on Denim in 'Love Don't Cost a Thing'
No one talk to me while I convince myself I can definitely pull off a micro mini with a cropped denim jacket, matching boots, and a fluffy purple purse.
Amanda Seyfried's One-Piece Swimsuit in 'Mamma Mia!'
Literally remember this movie coming out and RUSHING to Google this swimsuit. No clue where it's from, but J.Crew has a nearly identical one under $100, and that is good enough for me.
Torrance's Tank Top in 'Bring It On'
Torrence wore this tank top to a sleepover, and her friend's hot brother thought she was cute—so it was *obviously* imperative that we all copied her.
Elle Woods's Sparkly Pink swimsuit in 'Legally Blonde'
Do: Wear it on campus while accompanied by a small dog.
Don't: Wear it in the water, 'cause pretty sure the sequins will fall off.
Blair Waldorf's Knit Hat on 'Gossip Girl'
If you're not wandering around in a knit beret and cape just randomly glaring at people when the first snow falls, you're not doing winter correctly.
Basically Every Outfit in 'Freaky Friday'
There's a lot to take in here, but if this photo has you reaching for the double grommet belt you've been holding onto since 2003, that's perfectly natural. And if you rudely discarded it, don't worry, Amazon is here for you.
Ryan Atwood's Angsty Jacket Combo on 'The OC'
"You'll see me in hindsight, tangled up with you all night" — me to anyone I see wearing this leather jacket / hoodie / white shirt combo.
Lorelai's Laundry Day Outfit on 'Gilmore Girls'
She's not a regular mom, she's a cool mom, etc.
Every Outfit in 'Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century'
Look, technically, this Disney movie dropped in 1999. But we're including it due to the absolutely legendary purple pleather 'fits / Raven's sunglasses.
Penny Lane's Mini Skirt in 'Almost Famous'
Adding "procure suede mini skirt" to my to-do list. Actually, lemme just leave this right here for you.
Marissa Cooper's Polka Dot Dress on 'The OC'
Been chasing this dress ever since it came out and still haven't found one this cute.
Summer Robert's Halter Top on 'The OC'
Let's go back to halter tops and summer handkerchiefs, who's with me?
Cher's Opaque White Stockings in 'Clueless'
Every closet needs a pair, preferably to style with silver Mary Janes and several shopping bags.
Blair's Neckerchief in 'Gossip Girl'
Blaire in a neckerchief: looks like this.
Me in a neckerchief: looks like a confused grandma with huge "let's get you back to bed" energy.
Chanel's Baby Pink Hoodie in 'The Cheetah Girls 2'
Excuse me while I call my mother and ask her to rifle through my clothes from the 2000s to find anything labeled Baby Phat.
Rose McGowen's All Purple 'Jawbreaker' Look
It's giving Daphne from Scooby-Doo in the best way possible.
Everything Happening in This 'House Bunny' Makeover Scene
We've been aspiring to recreate this energy since 2008.
Cady's Pink Skirt in 'Mean Girls'
Public Service Announcement: You can get a pink pleated skirt at ASOS for $8 and embrace your inner Plastic.
The Mean Girl Y2K Energy in 'Bend It Like Beckham'
Everyone else watching this movie: obsessing over Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
Me watching this movie: obsessing over the baby pink tops and Baby G watches. (Toss yours? You can STILL GET ONE, it's gonna be okay!)
Penny Lane Lace Tank Top in 'Almost Famous'
Not done with Penny Lane yet! Been searching high and low for a dupe of this, and there's a kinda similar vibe on Madewell for under $40.
Serena's Floral Yellow Dress on 'Gossip Girl'
The one time when florals for spring were actually groundbreaking.
