There’s a new berry on the block: the saskatoon.

Well, that depends on your definition of “new.” The saskatoon is a commercial variety of the wild juneberry, which is a pretty common sight in the Canadian wilderness. But only recently did the deep blueish-purple berry begin cropping up in Michigan grocery stores.

According to NPR’s The Salt, the flavor of the saskatoon is difficult to pin down. Some people say it tastes like a peach, while others pick up nutty, almond-like notes. More still think it tastes like a cross between a cherry and a blueberry. The most common description? Sweet as pie.

Well, then. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a package of saskatoons, go for the gold and substitute them for cherries or blueberries in a few trusted recipes. Like these:
