Wow. Please take a seat and get some smelling salts ready, because you’re about to low-key faint from this news: Kim Kardashian, veteran makeup and skincare enthusiast, just admitted to sleeping in her makeup literally all of the time. Yes, my face hurts, too.

Last night on Busy Tonight, host Busy Philipps asked Kim, “Have you ever slept with your makeup on?” And just when my beauty-obsessed brain waited for Kim to give a dissertation on the importance of clean skin, she said, “Oh, all the time.” Cue collective audience gasping and crying (not). “Like even if I can’t have glam the next day, I’ll sleep perfectly and maybe I’ll redo my skin, but I try to salvage it for two days.”

I mean, what?! Listen, I know that half of you probably do this exact same thing every single night, because washing your face is “hard” and you’re “too tired” and your skin “doesn’t have problems, so it’s clearly not that bad,” but to me and dermatologists everywhere, this is physically painful to hear.

Because sleeping in your makeup is pretty much the biggest offense in the beauty community, and for good reason: It dries out your skin, it causes irritation, and it messes with your skin barrier. And when your skin barrier is damaged and inflamed for a long period of time, it ages prematurely-meaning, yes, sleeping in your makeup can, over time, lead to fine lines and deeper wrinkles. Fun, right?

And if that’s not enough to scare you, maybe this story about a woman who almost went blind from sleeping in her mascara (the pics are pretty crazy, so read at your own risk) will be enough to get you to take off your makeup before bed. Eh, ehhh?
