Weird attractions in SWFL: We found Skunk Ape Research, Ghost Tours, more

Here in Southwest Florida, beaches are a great way to beat the heat, and Collier County has some hidden treasures for those looking for an adventure. We've dug up some odd and hidden attractions for you to discover.

1. Skunk Ape Research Headquarters

  • A cousin of the Bigfoot folktale, Skunk Ape, is believed to reside in the Everglades. There have been sightings across the entirety of South Florida presumably the 1800s. The skunk ape is said to be between six and nine feet tall, covered in hair and reek a stench similar to a skunk.

  • The Skunk Ape Research Headquarters feature animal exhibits with guided and self guided tours, guided tours through the Everglades and camping opportunities.

  • Entry to the animal exhibit for a self-guided tour is $10 for ages 12 and older, $5 for ages two to 11, campground guests have free entry. Guided tours are $12 for ages 12 and up, $6 for ages two to 11, and half price for campground guests.

2. The Revs Institute

  • The Revs Institute preserves historically-significant automobiles and gives the public an intimate opportunity to experience these cars. They educate visitors on the history, preservation, conservation and restoration of vehicles like the 1971 Porsche 917k, 1953 Porsche 550 Coupe, and 1995 McLaren F1.

  • Visitors are able to experience the Revs Institute by reserving tickets in advance. They do not accommodate walk-up visitors. They are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • They have four tour options, general admission, docent-led tours, 24 hours at Le-Mans Tour and docent-led tour with a walk through of the workshop.

    • General admission pricing for adults is $20. Students, military and those in education pay $15. Children eight and under have free admission.

    • Docent-led tours are $30 for adults and $25 for students, military and education.

    • The 24 hours at Le-Mans Tour and the docent-led tour with a workshop walk through are both $35 for adults and $30 for students, military and education.

3. Tin City

  • Tin City is a collection of waterfront boutiques, shops, restaurants and waterfront activities. Naples boat tours and cruises are available to visitors.

4. Marco Mystery & History Tours

  • These personalized trolly tours take you around Marco Island giving visitors close encounters with the ghosts that haunt the island.

  • Due to the bug population in the summers, tours run October through May. As of now, tours are only offered on Fridays and get booked quickly. According to Gina Sisbarro, the owner of Marco Mystery & History Tours, it is best to book a few months in advance. There is a flat fee of $350. The trolly seats 7. Larger parties must book a bus.

5. Tigertail Beach

  • Tigertail Beach is unique with a tidepool beach entry protected from the gulf by mangroves. Visitors can hunt for shells, explore the tidal pool, walk the white-sand beach and bird watch. There is a birdwatching tower for visitors to enjoy.

  • The beach is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset.
