Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, the new comedy in which Daniel Radcliffe plays a fictionalized version of parody singer Weird Al, drops on the Roku Channel later this week. The movie is itself a parody of Oscar-bait musician biopics, and follows the well-worn trajectory of an ingenue's rise to stardom and then inevitable fall from grace, using the loose plot beats of Yankovic's real life as inspiration. This means that not everything that viewers will see in Weird happened in exactly the same way in real life—if at all.

One storyline from the trailer which has already captured many people's imagination is the romantic relationship between Weird Al and Madonna, played here to '80s perfection by Evan Rachel Wood. In fact, people are so curious as to whether or not the two dated in real life that Yankovic tweeted his amusement that "Weird Al and Madonna" is currently one of the most searched terms against his name on Google.

In a recent conversation with Jimmy Fallon, Yankovic clarified the true nature of his relationship with the singer, the role that she plays in the heightened context of the movie. "On the trailer, it was obvious that there's something going on between me and Madonna, so everybody was like, did that really happen? Did Weird Al and Madonna have a thing?" He said.

"There are a few little nuggets of truth sprinkled throughout the biopic," he continued. "Our relationship is platonic, by the way. The only time I actually met her was in 1985. I talked to her for maybe like 45 second backstage. So that's the extent of the relationship."

He went on to joke that "she is a huge part of the movie," explaining that she is there to illustrate the "Yankovic bump," a real-life phenomenon where musicians would experience a spike in sales after their song was covered by Weird Al.

"Madonna sort of becomes like the 'villain' in the movie," he said. "She does everything she can to calculatedly get me to do a parody of her new single so she can get that Yankovic bump."
