Wednesday’s Child: Meet Zeriah, a 15-year-old looking for a forever family

Hundreds of kids are waiting in foster care hoping to be adopted. We at KARK are hoping to help these kids find loving homes through our Wednesday’s Child Series.

Hundreds of kids are currently in the state’s foster care system, waiting on a family to adopt them. Many of them are teenagers, unsure if they will find their forever family or age out of the system. It’s something that is never far from 15-year-old Zeriah’s mind.

Just like any teenager, Zeriah is always on her phone.

“I make a lot of TikToks,” Zeriah said.

She prefers getting creative on social media rather than with a recipe.

“I burnt some chicken so I’m not allowed in the kitchen, so I can’t really cook right now,” Zeriah laughed.

A self-proclaimed goofball with a love for cosmetology, Zeriah has big plans for her future.

“I want to be an orthopedic surgeon when I grow up,” she said.

However, right now, there’s something missing in her life.

“All my family is adopted; that is why I want to be adopted,” Zeriah said.

Zeriah has been in the foster care system since December 2016 because of parental neglect. Her adoption specialist Shelby Williams said Zeriah is the last of her siblings remaining in the system.

“At one point in time she said she wanted parents who look like her, but she’s also at the point where she doesn’t care anymore. She just wants a family,” Williams said.

Williams said with the right environment and a loving family, Zeriah has the potential to flourish.

“We need someone who can steer her in the right direction in a positive way,” Williams said. “I think that she has put up walls to protect herself, but I think it’s heartbreaking that this is something that she really truly wants and that she needs.”
