This Is the Wedding Trend Millennials Are Considering the Most in 2019

It’s no secret that millennials are shaking up traditions. Young adults ages 23 to 38 are ditching department stores for fast fashion websites, ordering takeout instead of cooking meals at home, and living together before marriage, according to Business Insider. But there’s a new trend on the rise among millennials when it comes to their weddings: elopements.

A recent survey by Helzberg Diamonds found that 91 percent of millennials anticipating a future marriage would consider eloping. The trend includes millennials who’ve previously married too. The survey found that more than three out of five young couples who got hitched said, if they had to do it all over again, they would elope.

This study comes on the heels of some low-key celebrity elopements this year. Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas spontaneously got married in Las Vegas in May 2019 in a ceremony officiated by an Elvis Presely impersonator. A few months earlier, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth (now separated) had a spur-of-the-moment, at-home ceremony with close friends and family only.

But considering elopement isn’t the only way millennials are changing up wedding traditions. In the last few years, The Knot has found that millennials are challenging relationship and engagement norms like never before.

Personalization is taking the wedding industry by storm, according to The Knot 2018 Real Weddings Study. More and more couples are bucking tradition in place of sharing more personalized elements of their love story. Considering all the changes to traditional wedding ceremonies, it’s not a huge shock that a majority of millennials would consider eloping.

It’s worth noting that many adults ages 23 to 38 will still follow up an elopement with a massive reception with extended family and friends. Couples still register for gifts and wear fun wedding outfits for their big celebrations. Turner and Jonas even had a second destination ceremony in France. The Knot study also found that the national cost of an average wedding is $33,931, meaning that there are still plenty of couples planning full-on weddings to celebrate their love for each other.
