Wedding tattoos are a thing now, and TikTok has strong opinions on the matter: ‘So unsafe’

Couples in search of unique wedding experiences are hiring tattoo artists for their receptions — and people are torn about the idea.

Whether it’s offering permanent party favors to guests or inking the newlyweds themselves, tattoo artists are joining the ranks of popular wedding vendors, right there beside grazing board caterers and live portrait painters.

Judging by these new wedding trends, it’s safe to say that millennials and Gen Z couples are looking to shake up our traditional ideas around weddings. And what better way than with some fresh ink?

However, as evidenced by some of the comments, not everyone is keen on the idea of wedding day tattoos, especially in the form of party favors.

Tattoos as permanent party favors

Wedding photographer Lindi Mishé (@lyndimishephotography) gained over 6.1 million views, 598,000 likes and 34,000 saves when she uploaded a video captioned, “Your sign to have a tattoo artist at your wedding.”

While Mishé ended up turning off comments on the video, MSN reports that the video generated strong reactions from some viewers.

“I couldn’t imaging how stressful for the artist it’d be to have to set up, stencil & tattoo, and then sanitize everything. Outside. Over and over,” one user commented.

“Normally you only wake up the next day with a sore head — this takes regrets to a whole new level,” wrote another user.

However, some users loved the idea. “The amount of random tattoos I would leave with. Omg,” one comment read.

According to MSN, through a series of follow-up comments, Mishé explained that the tattoo artist “charged everyone a set price of $60,” and “it was cocktail hour so no one was drunk yet!”

Drunkenness was a concern voiced in the comments of another tattoo party favor video, this time shared by artist @steph.enigma.

“People lining up for one with alcohol in their hands 😳 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩” commented @flash_and_bruce.

“How does this work with alcohol consumption? I’m wanting to possibly book for my wedding but we r Scottish 😳 every1 will be steaming so fast 😅😳” asked @megannicholsonnew.

To this, @steph.enigma replied, “Everyone has to sign a waiver to confirm they are not under the influence — I have the right to refuse anyone that is clearly intoxicated 🥰”

While many seemed concerned with mixing alcohol and tattoos, others were more curious about how pricing works.

“Does each guest pay for their tattoo or is it covered in the fee paid by the bride & groom??” asked @emunicorns.

To this, @steph.enigma directed users to her Instagram highlights, where the different price packages are broken down.

However, while some TikTokers are expressing concern over the idea of permanent party favors, others are fully on board with the idea.

When tattoo artist @thegabah shared footage of his latest wedding gig, viewers flocked to the comments to support the concept.

“I wish I would have known 5 years ago! Perhaps for the vow renewal!” wrote @mrsrhodes18.

“Omg i love thissss🔥🤘🏼” commented @groovylilthangg.

“I’d RSVP so fast,” wrote @lahylag69.

Couples saying “I do” in ink

While some couples are hiring tattoo artists to ink their guests, others are opting for tattoos themselves, commemorating their special day with a permanent memento.

Bride and TikToker @jennifernoelle3 gained over 1.3 million views when she and her groom uploaded footage of their own wedding day ink.

Still in their wedding attire, the two were tatted right behind their ears, opting for their wedding date in Roman numerals.

Wedding photographer @leclicfotografie gained over 2 million views when she shared another couple’s wedding day tattoos, this time performed outdoors as guests watched.

This time, viewers expressed concerns over how fresh ink would work on a honeymoon.

“Depends on where you go for your honeymoon cause now you can’t go swimming or be in the sun too long,” commented @pierced_sponge.

“Still fresh tattoo is a wound. They will drink they will sweat. So unsafe,” commented @cebracik.

“I wanna be able to drink and party at my wedding and honeymoon,” wrote @eccentricemilyc.

Temporary wedding tattoos

For those who like the idea of wedding day tattoos — but don’t want to commit to lifelong ink — many are choosing temporary tattoos.

For her big day, tattoo artist and bride-to-be @julia.stabs.people designed a set of temporary flash tattoos inspired by the couple’s own tattoos, their favorite music and their life together.

Are wedding tattoos safe?

Because reputable tattoo artists typically work out of clean, sterilized salons, anyone considering getting a tattoo done at a wedding or other party should ensure the tattoos are being applied safely.

According to WebMD, it’s important to follow these steps before getting inked:

  1. Only use a tattoo shop where all employees are properly trained.

  2. Make sure your tattoo artist wears new disposable gloves to minimize your risk of contamination. And that they throw them in the trash between tattoos.

  3. Check that they’re using needles from sealed containers, and that the pigment trays are new.

  4. Be sure the shop has a sterilization machine and uses it to clean equipment that is too expensive to throw away.

  5. Don’t be afraid to ask how the employees sterilize the countertops, tables, and chairs. They should be using a bleach-based disinfectant. If the shop isn’t clean, get out. Blood travels and can contaminate all different types of surfaces.

  6. Ask where the inks come from. Some inks might contain metals and solvents that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate.
