Wedding caterer shares how she handled the bride giving her the wrong date: 'It's actually today and it's in nine hours I'm so sorry'

“Grazing boards” have become a popular trend for weddings and big events, and while grazing boards and charcuterie boards are similar in that they both offer a selection of snack foods like nuts, fruit, veggies and dips, grazing boards are on a much larger scale.

Emmy Rener, who founded Sophisticated Spreads (@sophisticatedspreads) in Los Angeles with her business partner, wanted to be able to offer their grazing board design services to couples getting married. But for those who think putting together a grazing board is as easy as a quick trip to the store, Rener detailed the moment she realized a bride had accidentally given her the wrong date for her wedding.

“This genuinely happened to me and I was terrified,” Rener wrote on her TikTok. Rener also shared the follow-up to the situation and how she still managed to “slay” the grazing broad for the bride.

Spread with a storytime

Rener initially posted a humorous TikTok about the incident with the popular “What do you mean?” clip from Jennifer Lawrence eating spicy wings on the show “Hot Ones,” but her followers demanded more details.

“Story time!” wrote @jennifermaries33.

“We need a storytime how this handled!!!” echoed @hanabds07.

Rener complied, posting two follow-up TikToks that detailed exactly how the bride had gotten her own wedding date mixed up, how they both came to the same horrifying realization and how she was still able to make it happen.

In the first TikTok, Rener explained that the bride had reached out to her company in March to book a grazing board for an August wedding. The bride provided the details, including the date for Aug. 23, and the request for a 75-person grazing table. Per her protocol, Rener then sent the bride an invoice that included the date and the bride paid the entire bill in full.

A week before the wedding, Rener then followed up with a confirmation email — however, she didn’t include the date in the follow-up email.

“It was a rookie move, but I didn’t include the date because I just assumed like, ‘Who screws up their own wedding?’” Rener said in the video.

Despite not including the date, Rener received an email response from the bride saying she was “super” looking forward to the big day. It wasn’t until Aug. 22 rolled around that Rener received yet another email from the bride that said, “Hi! Looking forward to today!” when Rener realized that they had a “big issue” on their hands.

Somehow, the bride also seemed to realize her mistake right around the same time Rener did, because Rener added that she received another email from the bride 10 minutes later that said, “Holy s***, I just realized I sent you the wrong date for my wedding. It’s actually today and it’s in nine hours I’m so sorry.”

Mixing up the wedding date is not a unique experience, according to wedding industry insiders

While it might seem impossible for a bride to make a mistake on their own wedding day, Rener’s comment section was full of other wedding professionals who had faced similar situations.

“This happened to me! And the venue rang me the Monday before to confirm for the Saturday and I was on holiday in a different country,” said baker @colhouncreations.

“Literally happened to me. I own a catering comp. She sent me the wrong day and signed a contract! I had an entire staff ready for Friday. It was Saturday!! I called her on Thursday to confirm details for the next day…Then we realized the mistake. I had to get a whole new staff together,” added @tabithamomof3.

Others pointed out that technically and legally speaking, Rener was under no obligation to provide the bride with the grazing table on the correct day.

“Sounds like a her problem & not a you problem,” observed @king_kells_.

@emmy kudos to u. A lot of young ppl nowadays would say ‘too bad ur mistake’ to the bride. U run an amazing business!” added @lindseyd2ca.

But Rener explained in part two that she and her business partner had nothing else booked for the day, so they “started hauling a**” immediately to make the deadline of a 75-person grazing table that had to be set up by 3 p.m. at a venue that was an hour and a half away.

And in the end, the duo was able to pull it off and Rener showed off the end results that she was clearly very proud of.

“This was like seriously a crazy time and here are the photos,” she said in summary in her video. “This is just photo evidence right here of how we made freaking magic happen. Can we take a moment for this veggie cruditie moment? Oh my goodness. Yeah, we slayed.”
