It's the most wonderful time of the year, especially if you're soon to jolt yourself out of Christmas jumper, checked pyjamas and cashmere socks mode to escape to sunnier or snowier climes and delay the January blues a little longer.

The rise of the winter getaway brings with it a whole new style conundrum, though. While the shops are fully focused on catering to all our holiday needs in spring and summer, at this time of year there's a little more work involved.

To help you pack efficiently, we've compiled the key pieces for every type of winter holiday, whether you're off for a quick a city break or luxuriating in the winter sun...

City break

The most crucial component of a city break capsule wardrobe is a pair of comfortable shoes. Trainers are the superior option for covering a lot of ground, but boots (provided they aren't brand new) will also do the trick. Steer clear of sporty styles, and instead look for a sleek, city-suitable alternative. Eco friendly brand Veja is a trainer label that bridges the comfy-chic divide.

A wrap coat that will keep you warm while also nipping you in at the waist will also be a welcome addition. Add character to your look with quirky accessories.

Country retreat

If you're heading to the countryside, we advocate embracing checks, plaid and tweed with open arms. While these materials are always well suited to leafier plains, this is especially true during the festive period.

Substantial wet weather gear is also a must. Think sturdy boots (more stylish than wellies) and hooded outerwear. And layer up. You will inevitably be nipping in an out of pubs and cafes, so having pieces you can peel off or layer on will be hugely helpful.

Beach holiday

If you're lucky enough to be heading off for some winter sun, you'll need to bag yourself a fabulous cover-up than you can throw on over your swimwear and wear with leather sandals (opt for a pair that you can style with socks once you're home) and statement earrings for evening.

A flattering - and supportive - all-in-one will also be a Godsend for this time of year when our skin hasn't had the benefit of (albeit minimal) sun exposure, and our waistlines have expanded along with our chocolate intake.

Skiing trip

Although you'll reside in salopettes and ski boots for the majority of the time on a skiing holiday, your après-ski attire is equally (if not more) important. Thermals are a must, and thanks to the likes of Uniqlo and Sweaty Betty you needn't skimp on style in this deparment. A colourful, streamline Heattech polo neck is a hardworking item that will take you seamlessly from piste to party. Luxe woolen accessories and snow-proof boots will be the perfect finishing touches.

Active adventure

For those who prefer an energetic holiday, fighting the Christmas bulge by hiking around hilltops, supportive trainers, (preferably those that are purpose built for outdoor activities), flattering exercise leggings and wafer thin, breathable layers are all integral.

A sleeveless puffa jacket is a good choice where outfit toppers are concerned, keeping you warm but allowing for plenty of movement. And don't forget a practical bag. The last thing you want to be doing while trekking up a steep slope is worrying about your belongings.
