Whether you're having a lovely break at your family home in the countryside, spending the festive season on a staycation in the city, or (lucky you) abroad in the sun, we've done all of the hard work so that you can pack easily and look chic for your escape.

Here's what to wear for every type of Christmas break...

In the countryside

Moe cardigan, £174, By Malene Birger; Chelsea boot, £235, Russell & Bromley; Corduroy trousers, £24.99, H&M; Cotton tweed coat, £345, Toast; Chunky gold hoops, £90, Otiumberg; Eva hat, £49, Hobbs

Long rural walks call for cosy layers that can be easily unpeeled should you happen upon a lovely pub in the afternoon. This means that all of your dodgy old grey marl jersey is out, and tonal chic knits are in, so that your outfit looks just as good once you lose your top layer.

Opt for long-sleeved light knits as a base, then add a statement cardigan. Chunky walking boots are a must, as are comfortable trousers or jeans, and a crossbody bag in a bright shade to pep up neutral outfits.

For any evening events, opt for velvet which should keep you warm as the nighttime chill kicks in. A trouser suit in a jewel toned hue, paired with an evening boot is ideal.

A winter sun break

Ancient Greek leather sandals, £130, Matches Fashion; Hunza G seersucker swimsuit, £130, Net-a-Porter; Printed shirt, £39.99, Zara; Chinos, £7, Next; Tortoiseshell sunglasses, £40, Le Specs; Macrame basket, £195, Rae Feather

Packing for a sunny break when temperatures back home are in the single figures isn't easy. The shops are full of wool and cashmere, so to update your summery outfits with some last minute buys, you'll need to look to online havens like ASOS, Net-a-Porter and Matches Fashion which offer holiday clothing year round.

A cotton sundress is a no-brainer: wear it over a swimsuit (in a festive hue, natch) or with tan slides and a straw tote by day. An oversized stripe shirt is great on its own at the beach, then with chinos and espadrilles for sightseeing.

It's always worth packing a light cover-up for evening: a silky kimono or beaded jacket offer a glamorous touch.

A spa weekend

Sheepskin slippers, £55, Just Sheepskin; Cashmere wrap cardigan, £135, Arket; and trousers, £125, Arket; Interstellar necklace, £215, Missoma; Velvet dressing gown, £35, M&S

If you're lucky enough to be relaxing at a spa over Christmas, comfy separates are key to ensure maximum relaxation - no one wants to be in a restrictive pair of jeans post-Swedish head massage.

Opt for pulled together loungewear, like this knitted top and trousers, that can easily be paired with flat mules, gold jewellery and sweet hair slides to elevate your look when you need to head down to the restaurant for brunch.

You'll be grateful for packing a luxurious dressing gown, too - much nicer than a standard hotel one.

A skiing trip

Reusable cup, £10, KeepCup; Wool blend knit, £49.99, H&M; Beanie, £16, Topshop Sno; Ski jacket, £375, Perfect Moment; Toni Sailor technical trousers, £480, Matches Fashion

If you'll be on the slopes over the Christmas break, ensure you're in the festive spirit by opting for jazzy, bright pieces in festive hues. Opt for a Christmas jumper under your quilted coat and be sure to layer a fine knit underneath for extra warmth.

Activewear brand Perfect Moment do the best skiwear in statement prints and colours, which should add festive cheer to your snowy days.

As you'll likely be bringing a big suitcase along to fit all of your skiwear in, throw in a few extra chunky knits, which can be worn over your favourite printed midi dresses by night. Team with a bright lip and knee-high boots to nail chalet chic.

A city staycation with friends

Embellished pencil skirt, £45, M&S: Strappy mules, £45, Charles & Keith; Bejewelled earrings, £59, Uterque; Extra fine merino knit, £24.90, Uniqlo; Cream coat, £389, LK Bennett

If you'll be with friends in the city, we'd counsel you to save your cashmere co-ords for movie nights and instead, take full advantage of the festive occasion and dress up. Opting for a smart/casual look by day means you can head straight out for drinks following dinner.

A statement skirt is an ideal starting point to dress around. Pair a sequinned midi or velvet pleated skirt with a simple knit and chic mules for a look that isn't so dressy it's uncomfortable, but is glamorous enough that friends will appreciate your stylish efforts. For evening, throw on some statement earrings and you're good to go.
