With only three days left until Dec. 25, the countdown to Christmas is officially in full swing. After you bake cookies with your kids to leave out for Santa and Rudolph, questions about their whereabouts will likely follow at a constant pace. Luckily, it's not up to you to come up with an answer all on your own.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) continues its tradition of tracking Santa's trip to deliver presents to good little boys and girls across the planet once again this year. Here's the story of how the global phenomenon was born, in the agency's own words:

"It all started in 1955 when a local newspaper advertisement informed children they could call Santa directly – only the contact number in the advertisement was misprinted. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone rang through to the crew commander on duty, U.S. Air Force Colonel Harry Shoup, at the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center, the predecessor to NORAD. Col. Shoup was quick to realize a mistake had been made, and assured the child he was Santa. Shoup then assigned a duty officer to continue answering calls. Thus, a tradition was born, and continued when NORAD was formed in 1958."

Beginning at 2:01 a.m. EST on Christmas Eve, you can watch Santa make the final preparations for his mission as he counts down to take off. And now there are more ways than ever to track the world's longest flight, which originates from the North Pole:

You can log onto NORAD's website, call the toll-free number 1-877-Hi-NORAD (1-877-446-6723), or even email noradtrackssanta@outlook.com.

Santa can be tracked across all of your favorite social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. There is also a mobile app available for both iOS and Android devices.

OnStar members can push that little blue button in their cars to find Santa's location. You can also ask Alexa to locate him through the "NORAD Tracks Santa" skill.
