It’s always great to make the special mom and/or mother figures in your life feel appreciated on the one day of the year that’s dedicated solely to them: Mother’s Day! Whether you planned a fancy dinner or bought her favorite treat, hopefully you’re doing what you can to make the day shine.

That said, sometimes what feels like the simplest part of a gift can also be the toughest: the card! No matter how much you care about your mom, mother-in-law, or mother figure, it can be difficult to convey that through the written word. Nevertheless, it’s important that you try to write something on that card.

Why? "Mother’s Day cards are a way to tell someone that you love them, to share the way they make your life happy, and the way they make you feel loved by them," says Jenni Skyler, PhD, a certified sex therapist, sexologist, and director of The Intimacy Institute.

Basically, writing a nice note in a Mother’s Day card is a way to initiate a "positive interaction and a memorable experience for both parties," says Janet Brito, PhD, a clinical psychologist and sex therapist in Honolulu.

In general, it’s "good practice to express your feelings and communicate honestly," Brito adds. "By expressing vulnerability, it allows one to have a more intimate connection." And those intimate, close connections are kind of what life’s all about, right?

So, if you’re up for writing a sweet message in your card, but could use a little help finding the right words, read on. Ahead, you'll find 45 different heartfelt phrases, quotes, and ideas to write in your Mother’s Day card. (And don’t be surprised if your recipient gets misty eyed!)
