“Eyebrow lamination is basically a keratin straightening treatment for the eyebrow hairs,” says Alixandria Capperelli, esthetician, master brow artist, and founder and owner of Hairy Little Things. “It perms by straightening the hairs up and into place for six to eight weeks.” It’s essentially an extreme version of a brow gel, she adds.

Brow lamination redirects the growth and pattern that the hair lays in after being straightened. Since eyebrow hairs typically grow in different directions, this treatment is great for helping the brows become a bit more cohesive, allowing you to shape them and make them look fuller or more defined, adds Daria Nartov, founder and managing partner of Sugaring NYC.

How to laminate your brows at home

Beforehand, you’ll want to figure out how to place your brows, brush them, and shape them. You can always experiment with your shape, since it’s only temporary, Nartov adds. However, you’ll need to be careful. Since brow lamination uses strong chemicals—similar to bleaching your hair at home—there’s a possibility that the chemicals can fry your eyebrows off if left on for too long. Plus, there's one ingredient you should avoid: formaldehyde, Capperelli says.

So, whichever kit you purchase, be sure to follow the package’s directions. To be on the safe side, keep the chemicals on your brows for less time than recommended and see what the results might look like, Nartov says.

The last thing to note: You might not have to wait five to six weeks before laminating again. Nartov does it every two to three weeks because she likes the fresh, feathered look. So, it’s up to you and your personal preference.
