Way Cool: The Smartify App Is Like Shazam, But for Art

In our dreams, we're beyond knowledgeable about everything art-related, from the name of that painting on that movie poster to the real reason van Gogh cut off his ear. In reality, we need a little help sometimes.

For those times, there's Smartify. The new app (free for iPhone and Android) bills itself as "the Shazam of the art world," referencing the popular music app that identifies songs that you totally know but can't remember the name of the band.

By cross-referencing a piece of art with a vast, constantly-updating database, Smartify can reveal the title and artist of thousands of artworks. To use it, after downloading, simply snap a pic in the app of the work you're interested in and, so long as it's part of the database, you'll be presented with its title, artist and more information like its history and interviews with the artist.

The app has already partnered with some of the world's most famous museums and galleries (including NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art, London's National Gallery and Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum) and has plans to expand even more.
