Future royal Meghan Markle has been fighting the good fight since her childhood. In 1993, 11-year-old Meghan wrote letters to First Lady Hillary Clinton and Gloria Allred after seeing a sexist Ivory dish soap commercial that proclaimed, “Women are fighting greasy pots and pans” across America. She also wrote to Procter & Gamble, manufacturer of the product, and Linda Ellerbee, host of Nickelodeon’s Nick News program. Not long after, Meghan was invited to be on Nick News to weigh in on other problematic commercials.

“I don’t think it’s right for kids to grow up thinking these things that just mom does everything,” 11-year-old Meghan says in a clip that aired on Inside Edition this week following her engagement news. “It’s always, ‘mom does this,’ and ‘mom does that.’” Eventually, her letters paid off: Procter & Gamble later changed the commercial to read that “People all over America” were fighting greasy pots and pans.

Meghan would later reflect on this chapter of her life while giving a speech as a UN Women ambassador at the 2015 UN Women conference in Beijing. “It was at that moment that I realized that the magnitude of my actions. At the age of 11, I had created my small level of impact by standing up for equality,” she said at the time.
