The Oscars are coming up soon—on March 12, to be exact— and you know what that means? You should be cramming in viewings of the Best Picture nominees so you can be that person in your group chat who, come March 12, can say something like, “Yes, I really did think Everything Everywhere All at Once was the best movie of the year and deserved to win, but my favorite screenplay was actually Women Talking.” We encourage pretentiousness here!

Women Talking is, in fact, one of the 10 Best Picture nominees (and for what it’s worth, it was one of my favorite movies of 2022). It’s based on the book of the same name by Miriam Toews, and it follows a group of Mennonite women who have been suffering sexual assaults at the men in their community for years. A group of them have to decide, on behalf of all the women, whether they’re going to stay in the community or go. It’s a powerful story that is really, really worth seeing. And notably, the movie has no rape scenes, despite the plot revolving around sexual assault. In case you want to read the book before you see the movie:
