What to Watch the Week of January 21: The Bachelor Returns and Sofía Vergara’s Griselda Premieres

The Bachelor is back this Monday night with 28-year-old tennis pro Joey Graziadei (from Charity Lawson}s season of The Bachelorette) in the driver’s seat. After the massive success of The Golden Bachelor, I can’t say I’m dying to see another 20-something try to fall in love (seriously, what’s it going to take to get some more 30- and 40-something bachelors and bachelorettes in the mix?), but Joey’s season is being billed as the most romantic, so maybe I’ll be surprised. (If nothing else, they do go to Italy.)

And speaking of The Golden Bachelor, the ASKN ladies (April, Susan, Kathy, and Nancy) appeared in a promo for Joey’s season over the holidays, and Joey appeared on their season, so I wouldn’t rule out our favorite ladies making an appearance on this season of The Bachelor. Let’s hope.

If you want something more dramatic—and by dramatic, I mean grittier, darker, and very violent—then you’re in luck, because Griselda premieres on Netflix this Thursday. Sofía Vergara is nearly unrecognizable in the lead role and gives one hell of a performance, proving she’s always been more than just the hilarious Gloria Delgado-Pritchett.

Then on Friday, three of today’s hottest actors—Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, and Ncuti Gatwa—star in Apple TV+’s period drama Masters of the Air, produced by heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

Also, for all you Barry Keoghan fans, the Saltburn actor has the potential for his second Oscar nomination (he was nominated last year for The Banshees of Inisherin) when the 96th Academy Awards nominations come out this Tuesday, January 23. We’ll have the full list for you here.

Monday, January 22

The Bachelor (ABC): Joey Graziadei begins his journey to find love. In tonight’s premiere, he meets 32 women, ranging in age from 23 to 31. Based on the below preview, who knows if he’ll find lasting love, but we’ll definitely get new gorgeous locales to help us plan our next vacation. 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT

Wednesday, January 24

A Real Bug’s Life (Disney+): After a first run on NatGeo, the fascinating series about some of our smallest creatures comes to Disney+. (Trust me, you’ll never knowingly kill a bug again.) In episodes inspired by the World of Disney and Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, you’ll learn about nine different micro bug worlds around the globe. Awkwafina narrates this family-friendly series. Streaming

Queer Eye (Netflix): Season eight arrives with six new episodes as the Fab Five return to New Orleans. There, they’ll help make over the lives of a coach and teacher to deaf students, as well as an outdoorsman looking to reignite the passion in his marriage. Streaming

Thursday, January 25

Griselda (Netflix): You’ve never seen Sofía Vergara like this. The six-episode limited series is violent, gruesome, and wickedly smart as it depicts the life of Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In ’70s and ’80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as the Godmother. Streaming

In the Know (Peacock): This adult semi-animated comedy consists of six 30-minute episodes. Here’s what we know, from to Peacock’s cleverly written synopsis: “Lauren Caspian is NPR’s third most popular host. He’s a well-meaning, hypocritical nimrod, just like you and me. He’s also a stop-motion puppet. Each episode follows the making of an episode of Lauren’s show In the Know, in which Lauren conducts in-depth interviews with real-world human guests. Lauren collaborates with a diverse crew of NPR staff. They are also puppets and nimrods.”

The voiceover cast includes Succession’s J. Smith-Cameron (who plays the co-executive producer of In the Know), and live-action interviews feature Kaia Gerber, Jonathan Van Ness, Ken Burns, Finn Wolfhard, Norah Jones, Tegan and Sara, Nicole Byer, Roxane Gay, Mike Tyson, Jorge Masvidal, and Hugh Laurie. Friday, January 26

Masters of the Air (Apple TV+): Apple is counting on this limited series, starring Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, and Ncuti Gatwa, and produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, to make a huge splash. Masters of the Air is based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the Bloody Hundredth) as they conduct dangerous bombing raids over Nazi Germany amid strenuous conditions. Two episodes at launch, followed by one a week until March 15

Expats (Prime Video): The six-part limited series stars Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, Brian Tee, Jack Huston, and Ji-young Yoo, and is based on the international best-selling novel The Expatriates, by Janice Y.K. Lee. The series focuses on three women—Kidman’s Margaret, Young’s Mercy, and Blue’s Hilary, as they navigate the aftermath of a family tragedy. Streaming

Junction (Hyperborea Films): Bryan Greenberg wrote and directed this film about the opioid crisis and the effects it takes on three individuals in particular: a pharmaceutical CEO, a doctor, and an addict. Greenberg also stars, along with Ryan Eggold, Ashley Madekwe, Sophia Bush, Griffin Dunne, Jamie Chung, Michaela Conlin, Dascha Polanco, and Josh Peck. In theaters and on demand

Hightown (Starz): The third and final season premieres tonight. Per Starz, here’s what we know: “Fishery Service Agent Jackie Quiñones is off the wagon and off the force in the final season, but that doesn’t stop her from careening into the dark underbelly of picture-perfect Cape Cod to save a missing woman and a murdered sex worker. Meanwhile, her former colleagues Ray Abruzzo and Alan Santille are focused on taking down drug syndicates, but despite their best efforts, the drugs keep flowing. This attracts Shane Frawley, a gangster from Boston looking to cut himself in on the Cape’s drug trade—and making an enemy of Osito while he’s at it. Alliances are made and old loyalties are questioned in this beautiful but corrupt place where nothing is as it seems.” 9 p.m. ET/PT, and 12 a.m. ET on the Starz app, all Starz streaming and on-demand platforms

Confessions of a Cam Girl (Lifetime): Inspired by real stories, this movie of the week follows 18-year-old Kristen (played by Megan Best) as she secretly creates an online explicit-content page to raise $10,000 to attend fashion school. However, her plan doesn’t remain under the radar for long, and it eventually puts her future, as well as the safety of her family, in jeopardy. 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT
