Dylan Carter

The teams are almost full on the final night of Blind Auditions for season 24 of The Voice, so coaches John Legend, Gwen Stefani, Niall Horan, and Reba McEntire are being very selective in who they turn their chairs for.

But 20-year-old Dylan Carter from South Carolina still managed to get a four-chair turn for his rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You” despite there being only a few spots left.

“I love that song,” Reba tells Dylan. “I love songs when you can take it spiritual or secular, either one. So much emotion, and I saw it and I felt it, and I heard it when you were singing. That’s the kind of songs that do that to me, too.” Reba can’t get out her words as she chokes up. Then she continues, “I saw you get so emotionally involved. And that’s when you know you’ve got a great song and a great singer, when it touches your heart.”

“That means so much,” Dylan says, and Reba tells him, “To me as a performer, that is when you really hone into why you’re put on this earth, that is to touch people’s hearts, and you did.”

Niall says, “You made the queen cry in the best way possible. That was spectacular. I could really feel the emotion. You only get four chairs if it really moves the room. I could feel a few pitch issues when we did turn, but I think that’s normal.”

Dylan interrupts, explaining, “So much nerves.”

“I’d love to have you on my team,” Niall continues. “I think you’re special.”

Next, it’s Gwen’s turn to try to woo Dylan to her team. She says, “From the moment you opened your mouth, I was like, ‘This is my guy.’ I love your voice.”

John points out, “She was hovering the whole time.”

Gwen continues to persuade Dylan to join her team, saying, “Your voice is so warm, but you also have so much texture to your voice. Little nuances you were doing at the right exact moments that make it feel emotional. I was so excited for you. It’s weird to me to think that you were that shocked to get four chairs.”

Dylan says, “Very.”

Gwen then says, “This is a TV show situation. There’s a lot to learn. It’s a boot camp. You need a cheerleader like Gwen Stefani.”

Dylan responds, “You’d be my cheerleader, that’d be awesome.”

Then it was John’s turn to persuade Dylan over to his side. He begins saying, “It feels as if the emotion of the song is really real to you.”

Dylan stops John to say, “When I saw you all turn around, I saw my mom. She passed back in October. She wanted me to sing it at her funeral. So, I did it, I tried, but I couldn’t make it through it. This was the best second chance. I made her so proud.”

“Now, I’m crying,” John says.

“This was her dream before it was mine,” Dylan continues.

“That’s very moving,” John says. “We are all very grateful we get to do this show and we get to meet people like you. And we get to give you the opportunity to perform this song in tribute to your mother. And we all felt it, too. I know your mother is proud of you.”

Then Reba relates a personal story: “When I had the opportunity to go to Nashville to meet with some folks, Mama took me. I kept saying, ‘Let’s pull over here. Let’s pull over here.’ And finally she said, ‘Reba, if you don’t want to do this, let’s turn around and go back home. But let me tell you something, if you do this, I’ll be living my dreams through you.’ And I said, ‘Shoot fire, mama. Why didn’t you say that at the beginning? Let’s go.’”

“That’s how this feels,” Dylan says. “I hear her, through me.”

Reba wraps it up, “Mamas are so special. We’re very blessed to have them, right?”

“This is so hard,” Dylan says.
