Proof yet again that we don’t deserve dogs. As a man attempted to steal a bike on July 15, at approximately 10:40 pm, he was momentarily stopped in the name of cuteness. Surveillance footage released by San Diego police shows a thief making off with a bicycle that he nabbed from a garage, while the resident golden retriever is all wags and licks. The pup didn’t know or care that the man was doing something wrong, it just wanted to say hello.

And who can resist a happy dog? The thief takes time to stop what he’s doing and play a bit. The burglar gives the dog belly rubs and can be heard saying things like, “You’re so cool. Come here,” and doing that thing we all do where we cup a dog’s face and boop heads. And then, “You’re the coolest dog I’ve ever known. I love you, too. You’re a sweetheart.”

The thief even seems worried that the dog will run off and says, “Where’s your dad? Your dad should know enough not to leave the garage open.” The whole situation seems lost on the man stealing the bike as he calls out once more, “Dad! Where are you?”

The Washington Post reported that the Electra 3-speed bike is estimated to be worth $1,300. Police are asking anyone who recognizes the man in the video or the stolen bike to help identify the suspect. “The 2019 black bicycle has ‘8-ball’ caps on its tire valves, an ‘8-ball’ logo on its frame, and a black-and-white checkered pattern on the rear wheel frame.”

Meanwhile the super-friendly dog is getting most of the attention from the incident, attracting kudos from WeRateDogs, the authority on all things good-dog. And while the pup didn’t keep the man from stealing right out from under him, he did send the thief on his way with a smile and more wags. What more can we really ask for from furry friend?
