Horror fans—slasher fans in particular—can breathe a sigh of relief, because they are about to eat. Even more particular, fans of the Child's Play franchise, which has spanned 7 main series feature films and a reboot, have reason to be excited. That's because Chucky, an 8-episode season centered on the titular serial killing human-turned-serial killing toy doll, is about to debut on both USA Network and SyFy (NBCUniversal, which produces the show, clearly thinks highly of it, debuting it on two of its networks at once). And, folks, it's good.

Chucky brings the slasher/dark comedy spirit that the film series tends to get right all in one place, with updated television production value. Add in a talented cast of returning franchise stars (Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky along with Alex Vincent, Fiona Dourif, and Jennifer Tilly as the voice of Tiffany) and impressive newcomers (horror icon Devon Sawa and a group of actually good-acting teenagers), and Chucky is one of the best, and most focused, horror shows of 2021.

You might be wondering a couple things about the show. First: do I have to have seen the Child's Play or Chucky movies for the show to make sense? And the answer to that question is no. While of course watching this decades-running franchise's existing movies will help with context, creator Don Mancini (who writes all eight episodes of Chucky) does a great job of making his new series accessible to newcomers while still super pleasing and exciting for longtime fans.
