WATCH: Surfing 'Mini Tsunami' Waves from Massive Cruise Ship in Florida

Extra points for Ben Gravy.

When it comes to creativity, and his unrelenting quest for finding the world’s weirdest, most unusual, in many cases most difficult waves in the world to surf, the New Jersey native is in a league of his own. Aside, of course, from the world’s only other foremost weird wave authority, Dylan Graves.

But Gravy’s made an entire career out of it. And his latest surf escapade? Miniature tsunami waves breaking off the displacement of massive cruise ships in Florida.

“There’s heavy claims of tsunami waves off the backs of cruise ships as they leave,” Gravy states in the video above, somewhat skeptical himself about the phenomenon.

However, as footage interspersed throughout the vlog shows, beachgoers are seen scrambling to collect their belongings, holding onto their young ones for dear life as, essentially, a tsunami-esque surge of water inundates the shoreline.

A tsunami wave, by definition, is “a series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake.” They’re typically caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, meteors, etc.

In this case, it’s a gargantuan cruise ship in a Fort Lauderdale, FL channel doing the displacement. So, does it count as a tsunami? Maybe.

But the real question is…is it surfable?

Like a lot of Gravy’s adventures, the answer is: sorta.

“Not every novelty wave is the most epic wave ever,” Gravy says after surfing an ankle-high ripple off the wake of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, “but it’s not about that. It’s about committing to it and getting the ride. We fuckin’ did it, dude.”
