Maestro, Bradley Cooper's directorial follow-up to A Star Is Born, was a talked-about movie long before it was even released. Cooper's decision to wear a prosthetic nose while portraying the real-life Jewish composer Leonard Bernstein sparked controversy after early stills from the movie went viral and the actor was accused of perpetuating anti-Semitic stereotypes.

Bernstein's children Jamie, Alexander and Nina ultimately gave the movie—and Cooper's performance—their blessing, saying "It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose. Bradley chose to use makeup to amplify his resemblance, and we’re perfectly fine with that. We’re also certain that our dad would have been fine with it as well."

Donning prosthetics and drastically altering one's appearance is a tried-and-true way for an actor to gain credibility and, more importantly, win an award (think Nicole Kidman in The Hours, Charlize Theron in Monster, Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull), but Maestro is accumulating buzz for a number of reasons beyond Cooper's physical transformation.

The movie has been nominated for four Golden Globes, in the Best Motion Picture category as well as Best Actor and Best Director for Cooper, and Best Actress for Carey Mulligan, who plays Bernstein's wife Felicia Montealegre.
