WATCH: "Storm Trooper Foster Homes" Step In to Save Pets from The Jacksonville Humane Society
As Hurricane Dorian heads for Florida, millions of people are working together to ensure the safety of residents in the storm's path. So too, are some individuals working to ensure that our four-legged friends remain protected during the storm as well.
In Jacksonville, Florida, we're thrilled to hear that The Jacksonville Humane Society has safeguarded its animals thanks to some kind volunteers.
"You did it, Jacksonville! Thanks to you, nearly all of our pets will ride out Hurricane Dorian in loving Storm Trooper foster homes. Your response to our call for help was tremendous, and we can't thank everyone enough for their generosity and support. We feel so incredibly lucky to be a part of such a kind, compassionate community," a Facebook post on the organization's page reads.
In a post shared today, The Jacksonville Humane Society notes that, "[d]ue to a high call and email volume, if you have any questions or concerns, please message us on Facebook" regarding their closing and cancellation of classes and animal appointments and surgeries.
Meanwhile, pet lovers around the South are doing what they can to pitch in as the storm looms over Florida and other states. So far, the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue in Middle Tennessee has welcomed dogs ahead of Hurricane Dorian's arrival, per Fox 17 Nashville. As Washington D.C.'s WTOP reports, Arlington-based rescue organization Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is also finding foster dog parents for pups from South Carolina. We can expect many more stories like these to emerge in the coming days and these precious animals need more support.
Of course, we wouldn't want Rover or Fido to face a tense situation like this one, but we're lucky to have such a strong community of Southern neighbors working together to keep humans' best friends safe.
