Watch: The Seven Cheapest Surf Trips According to This Guy

Let's face it, for most of us taking any surf trips at all comes down to one thing—and that's money.

Yeah there's the high-end surf destinations that seem to be commonplace now like fancy resorts in the Mentawais and yoga retreats in Costa Rica, but let's get real.

There's nothing like earning bragging rights with old-school surf trips where your only luxuries include cold showers, mosquito nets and fans, and you live on basic local fare like nasi goreng in Bali and pupusas in El Salvador.

In the video above, budget traveler and surfer Dan Harmon talks about the seven places he thinks are the most affordable for a surf trip. He lists El Salvador, Bali, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Nicaragua, and Ecuador.

I've been to the first four destinations and I agree that they can all be done super low budget.

He captioned the video:

Ever wondered where you can score waves on a shoestring? I’ve spent almost a decade traveling the globe, trying to find waves for as little expenditure as possible. While everyone has their preferences of what they’re prepared to do in terms of budget surf travel, some destinations are better than others. In this video–my top picks for scoring waves without breaking the bank.

Viewers commented with insight as well:

"Just returned from El Tránsito, Nicaragua. Maybe a little harder to get to. But only 1.5 hours from Managua. Area is growing with restaurants and hostels. Great people . Was a great trip."

"TBH, Indonesia offers much more cheaper alternatives for surfing besides Bali, especially areas that's not populated by common tourist But no doubt Bali is much more convenient compared to the rest I would say."

"Great job man. But you should never forget to mention the safety factor. I live in Ecuador and have been to Nicaragua and both have their own safety complications. I believe mexico and morroco definetely suffer from this as well to say the least."
