Watch Seth Meyers Try to Make Sense of Trump’s Unhinged Easter Speech

As Seth Meyers noted on Monday night, Sunday was the holiest day in the Christian calendar: Easter. “So Trump woke up bright and early and tweeted to his followers, ‘HAPPY EASTER!’ And all was right with the world . . . for 90 minutes. And then Trump started raving about caravans of immigrants.”

The president’s Easter Sunday was truly a remarkable thing to behold. It included long-winded tweets about the Mexican border and DACA, prompting Meyers to reply, “Who could forget how Christ rose on the third day and said unto his followers, ‘We gotta do something about all these Mexicans!’”

“Not that I’m surprised Trump doesn’t embrace the spirit of Easter,” Meyers added. “I bet every kid who found an egg on the White House lawn is getting a bill within the next week. ‘We have had terrible egg deals for too long. Kids have been taking our eggs. They’ve been laughing at us!’”

And then came the most bizarre part of the president’s Easter: his odd comments during the White House Easter Egg Roll. Normally, the annual event is a festive gathering in which children race to push eggs across the White House lawn with long spoons. As Meyers noted, all the president needed to do was “come out, say hello to the families participating, thank the First Lady, and thank the White House Historical Association.” Sadly, that’s not exactly what he did.

The weirdness started when Trump struggled to describe the White House, calling it an “incredible house, or building, or whatever you want to call it—because there really is no name for it.”

“There’s a name for it!” a befuddled Meyers shot back Monday night. “It’s the name everyone calls it; it’s the White House! I used to think you put your name on buildings out of pure ego. Now I think it’s just so you can find them! . . . Trump talks about the most famous building in the world like a nervous tour guide on his first day.”

But the most bizarre moment came when the president yammered at the kids about such topics as the economy and military funding, saying, among other things, “Our military is now at level, will soon be at a level that it’s never been before. It’s, you see what’s happening, and you see what’s happening with funding. The funding of our military is so important and so many military people are with us today, so just think of $700 billion, because that’s all going into our military this year.” After a few moments, Meyers let out a pained wail.

“What are you talking about?!” Meyers said. “I’m shocked the children didn’t start booing. ‘Stop making us think about the military! We want eggs!’ Also, check out the Easter bunny next to him. Even he can’t believe what he’s watching. You can order that costume on Amazon if you just search for ‘confused Easter bunny.’”

And then, the true low: the moment in which the president, while answering questions and surrounded by children, tried to place blame on the Democrats for letting down DACA kids and insisted that “people are taking advantage of DACA.”

“Now obviously those kids didn’t say anything,” Meyers said, “but if they did, I imagine it would be something like, ‘In order to qualify for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, you have to have lived here continuously since 2007 and been under 16 when you arrived, which means no one arriving now would qualify for the program. And on top of that, you’re the one who canceled it last year, after which you rejected multiple bipartisan compromises to save it. So what you’re saying makes absolutely no sense. Now shut up and give us our fucking eggs!’”
