Adapted from the 2019 Casey McQuiston novel of the same name, Red, White & Royal Blue has been on the radar of patient fans for years, and the wait is finally over. The film stars The Kissing Booth’s Taylor Zakhar Perez and Purple Hearts’ Nicholas Galitzine, alongside Uma Thurman, Stephen Fry, and more. The story depicts a fictional romance between two high profile young men—the prince of England and the son of the president.

The film made some news in early August when it earned an R rating, with many fans of the novel and crew of the film wondering if that same rating would have been levied on a film depicting a heterosexual relationship. Of a specific sex scene in the film, the film’s director Matthew López told People Magazine, “I think I was a little surprised at the R rating just because, while I never was encouraged to limit what we were showing or limit what I was depicting, the scene is what I intended to show. It plays exactly how I wanted it to play. But, I do question whether or not if it had been a man and a woman, if we'd still gotten an R rating."

What Is ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ About?

A pillar of the LGBTQ+ romance canon, Red, White & Royal Blue follows the romance between Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the United States President Ellen Claremont, and Henry, a British prince. The author curiously considered this storyline during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, becoming obsessed with the high-profile lifestyles of the royal and powerful. The story is pure fantasy and a lot of fun. The pair share a meet-cute at a royal wedding, as one does, and begin a sort of enemies to lovers trajectory. When Alex and Henry are photographed in a mistaken physical altercation, the two are forced to feign friendship for the media in the name of international diplomacy.

Uma Thurman’s Ellen Claremont plays a huge role in the story as the mother of Alex and the first female President of the United States, facing a reelection campaign in the universe of Red, White & Royal Blue.
