WATCH: The Property Brothers Say This Popular Home Feature is Totally 90s—and Not in a Good Way

Oh, Jonathan and Drew, where would our homes be without you?

In the latest episode of Property Brothers, Jonathan and Drew Scott the brothers set out to create the perfect home for newlyweds Cheryl and Javier, with a design that reflects both of their styles. Their biggest hurdle? Bringing the home out of the 90s and into the present day.

The first thing Cheryl expresses displeasure about is something we’re all too familiar with: the dated yellow oak banister. You probably haven’t given it much thought, but as Jonathan explains, this style of wood was popular in the 90s and has been known to outstay its welcome. Scrapping it can do a lot to modernize a home.

Unfortunately, the staircase isn’t the only place where the couple has to contend with the old-school yellow wood. It also rears its vintage head in the kitchen, where it’s used on the cabinets.

Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to this couple’s wood woes—one many of us could benefit from. Though the Scotts replaced the wooden cabinets and install some modern black handrails in the show, a simple coat of paint is all it takes to take this once-trendy feature into the present day.
