The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have attended the Wellchild awards in the past, but this year is different, Harry says, because of baby Archie.

In a speech at this evening's reception, Prince Harry became visibly emotional as he addressed the winners of the award which celebrates children and young people in the U.K. who are seriously ill, and those who work to make their lives better.

"It has been over a decade since I first came to these Awards and every year they never fail to surprise and inspire me. Yet this year, it resonates in a different way, because now I’m a father," he said referencing his five-month-old son Archie, who just only today attended his first playgroup in Windsor.

Harry also recalled the 2018 Wellchild Awards. When he and his wife Meghan attended last September, they knew they were expecting their first child together, but hadn't told anyone else yet.

"I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day, and more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time," he said.

"And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heart strings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own."

From there, Prince Harry turned his attention back to the Wellchild honorees, highlighting not only the evening's young award winners, but also their families, medical professionals, and other support systems, including those who donate to the community.

"Your determination and strength of spirit are an example for all of us," he said.
