The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, started in 1929 as a dinner at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with around 270 guests, where 15 statuettes were awarded honoring actors, directors and other members of the movie industry. The Oscars statuette is a gold-plated bronze trophy on a black metal base that features an Art Deco-style knight holding a sword while standing on a film reel with five spokes. The five spokes represent the original branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who award the Oscars: actors, writers, directors, producers and technicians.

The Oscars were first televised in 1953, which continued to broadcast the award show until 1960 when ABC took over. The highest-rated Oscars was the 70th Academy Awards in 1998 when Titanic, one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, won Best Picture. More than 57.25 million viewers tuned in that year. The lowest-rated Oscars came in 2021 when Nomadland took home the award for Best Picture. Around 10.4 million viewers tuned in.

Who is the Oscars 2024 host?

Who is the Oscars 2024 host? The Oscars 2024 host is Jimmy Kimmel, who previously hosted the Academy Awards in 2017, 2018, and 2023. “I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times,” the Jimmy Kimmel Live! star said in a statement, per Variety.

In a February 2024 interview with the LA Times, Kimmel admitted that he didn’t think he would host the Oscars for a fourth time. “I did not think I would ever do it again,” he said. “I did two of them, and they went well — something crazy happened at one of them with a story I’ll have for the rest of my life. I know how much work goes into them, so I thought, ‘Yeah, I don’t necessarily want to do this ever again.’”

The film that changed the late-night host’s mind was Joseph Kosinski’s 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick. “I knew there was a movie that people had seen, and it just makes the job easier,” he continued. “Then this year, I am sitting in a movie theater watching Barbie and thinking, ‘Well, maybe I’ll do this again, because at least I have a point of reference with everyone,'” he said, with the publication noting that the more popular the films are, the more references the audience will understand in his monologue. “I made a joke about ‘Moonlight’ that made it clear to me that the vast majority of the room had not seen the movie, even though it won best picture.”

Back when Kimmel was approached about hosting the Oscars for the first time, he knew he wasn’t the producer’s first choice, which he was okay with. Looking back, he said he was over-prepared for that first show in 2017. “I really rushed through my monologue,” he recalled. “I was nervous. But [afterward], I studied the tape and decided, ‘OK, I’m going to take my time with the monologue. I’m not going to race through it — if the show goes one minute long, I’m OK with that.’”

As for viewers who might be bothered by the bits or jokes he makes, Kimmel said there’s “nothing you could do about that” and it happens. He also explained that there’s an expectation that “the show is going to be classy and pristine.” He added, “I’m not always classy and pristine.”

Who is performing at the 2024 Oscars? All five of this year’s nominated original songs will be performed at the 96th Annual Academy Awards. Jon Batiste, Becky G, Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, Scott George and the Osage Singers, and Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson will take the stage to perform their respective nominated tracks.

The news comes after Variety reported on Feb. 26 that Ryan Gosling will sing “I’m Just Ken,” the Oscar-nominated song for Best Original Song. In the publication’s cover story that debuted in early February, the Barbie star insisted that the Academy hadn’t yet asked him to perform. “It might be too much of a risk to have me do it,” Gosling revealed. “I don’t know how that would work. But I’m open to it.”

Meanwhile, Mark Ronson, who penned the Billboard Hot 100 track with Andrew Wyatt, told Variety at the Grammys that it was his dream for Gosling to perform “I’m Just Ken” at the Academy Awards. “No. I think if Ryan doesn’t do it, then we’re not doing it,” the songwriter responded when asked if another singer should step in to sing the song if Gosling doesn’t want to perform.

Who are the Oscar 2024 nominees? Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb thriller Oppenheimer leads the 96th Academy Award nominations with 13 nods. The film has been nominated in nearly every major category, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt, Best Original Score and more. While Nolan does not have an Oscar, his movies have won almost a dozen, including The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. (The director was previously nominated twice before for 2000’s Memento (2000) and 2017’s Dunkirk.)

In an interview profile by the New York Times one day after the Oscar nominations were announced, Nolan and Downey Jr. spoke about about the Oscar nominations and what I win would mean to them. “I slept through them,” Nolan admitted about waking up for the nominations. “I didn’t want to jinx anything by setting the alarm and waiting. I figured if anything happened, someone would call me.” The director said that an Academy Award win would be a dream come true. “I grew up watching the Oscars. I’ve always loved Hollywood, Hollywood movies, studio films, all of that,” he explained.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s coming-of-age fantasy film Poor Things follows closely behind with 11 nominations. “Eleven nominations for Poor Things feels like a surreal dream,” Stone, who is nominated for Best Actress, said in a statement to CNN. “I am beyond grateful to the Academy for including me as both an actress and producer among this group of exceptional nominees and for recognizing our film in so many categories.”

Another big film contender with 10 nominations is Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation. The movie is up for categories like Best Picture, Best Director for Scorsese, and Best Actress for Lily Gladstone, the first Native American woman to be nominated in the category. “It’s incredible that this has happened, and it took a while,” Gladstone told Entertainment Weekly of her nomination.

She continued, “I remember when Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for Whale Rider, and I remember how I felt when I watched this incredible actress, the youngest and first Indigenous nominee in the category, tell this story. That felt so universal and felt so close to my upbringing, to my relationship with my land, with my family, with my father, with my language, all of it. It was incredible to see her representation, and this feels like it’s a true honor.”
