How to Watch the Oscar-Winning Film 'The Whale'

The past year has been a major win for motion pictures. With an ever-growing list of award-winning films to watch, there's one that lands at the top. A24's The Whale has captured the hearts of fans, and swept awards season with the triumphant return of Brendan Fraser to the big screen.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, who also helped create Black Swan and Requiem For A Dream, The Whale is the story of Charlie, a reclusive English teacher, whose main contact with the world beyond four walls is his online classes that he teaches behind a webcam that's always off. He desperately tries to reconnect with his teenage daughter, played by Sadie Sink, in an attempt for a last chance at redemption before his health crisis takes a turn for the worse.

The tear-jerking performance by Fraser has received high praise among critics and audiences around the world. Most recently, he won a Screen Actors Guild award and was awarded Best Actor at this year's Oscars ceremony (his co-star, Hong Chau, was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress).

He began his emotional SAG Awards speech by saying, "I will treasure this, but nevermore than what I treasured that I used to keep in my wallet which was my SAG card that I earned in 1991. It made me feel like I belonged." He continued, "We're actors—we all want to belong to a tribe and that's when I found where I belonged. And, if you told that guy back then that I'd be standing right here, right now, I would've not believed you."

For the time being, those wishing to stream the A24 film will have to buy or rent The Whale online. It is available on the following platforms:

Although A24 has not yet announced what major platforms the movie will be available on for free, the studio has previously approved deals with HBO Max, Showtime, and Paramount+, so The Whale will likely land a spot on one of those platforms down the road.
