Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza is a coming-of-age story set in 1970s San Fernando Valley. Starring Alana Haim (of the Haim sisters) and Cooper Hoffman, the son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, the movie premiered to rave reviews, and has gone on to earn three nominations at the 2022 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. The National Board of Review, often a hint at what's to come at the Oscars, also awarded Licorice Pizza Best Film, Best Director, and and Breakthrough Performance for Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman.
The plot focuses on Gary Valentine (Hoffman), a 15-year-old high schooler who has a big crush on Alana Hoffman (Haim), a 20-something photographer's assistant. They strike up an unlikely friendship and go into business together.
Anderson specifically cast the youngest Haim as the lead—he had worked with the sister band for years, directing their music videos, and wrote the film with her in mind. "I’ve seen Alana’s ferociousness. She may look like a Jewish girl from the Valley, but she’s sort of a ’30s throwback, fast-talking, very funny, very sharp. You do not want to challenge her in a fight with words, because she will win," he told the New York Times.
Haim's real-life family—sisters Danielle and Este, and parents Donna and Moti—appear in the film as her character's family at a Shabbat dinner scene.
