Here’s How to Watch ‘Mulan’ at Home When It Drops Next Month

Not to fear, Disney fans: Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan is still a go, and it will be released on Disney+ on September 4th. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has forced Disney to pull the full theatrical release of Mulan, so hopeful audiences can now watch the Liu Yifei-led film at home for the “premiere access” price of $29.99.

Despite the price tag, the release of Mulan is something fans thought they may never see. As of July 23rd, Variety reported that Disney delayed its release plans for Mulan indefinitely, stating, “It’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for Mulan as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world.”

Prior release dates for the film were slated for late March, then mid-July, and finally mid-August. However, the coronavirus pandemic spread across North America and thwarted all plans for a theatrical release. It seems a digital-only release on September 4th is the company’s best option.

Still, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said we shouldn’t get used to watching new Disney releases from the comfort of our own couch.

“We’re looking at Mulan as a one-off, as opposed to saying there’s some new business windowing model that we’re looking at,” Chapek said, per Variety. He continued, stating that the company is eager to see how Disney’s 60.5 million subscriber base will fluctuate once the movie drops. “We find it very interesting to take a premiere offering to consumers at that $29.99 price and learn from it.”

Once you buy Mulan, it appears as though you’ll own it for as long as you have your Disney+ account, which already costs $6.99 per month.

Many on Twitter are calling the price for purchase steep compared to the average cost of movie tickets and recent on-demand releases. For a family of say, five, or a group of Disney-loving, quarantined roommates, it may be worth it. But if you're planning on watching alone, is the $30 price going to work?

Of course, if you're a Disney+ subscriber and you don't want to shell out the cash, you can watch the OG Mulan animated movie on the streaming service right now.

As Chapek said, it will be interesting to see how audiences respond to this new release formula and if people are willing to pay the big bucks to see the much-anticipated live-action Mulan remake on Disney+.
