Pipeline giveth, and Pipeline taketh away.

Even if you’re Moana Jones Wong, surfing’s Queen of Pipeline, the wave does not discriminate. Everyone takes their lickings, no matter their status in the pecking order.

Like this wave from Moana, which she caught after the 2024 Lexus Pipe Pro wrapped, and which featured both the glory and the fury of Pipe.

This clip shows the aftermath. Before this, Moana slotted herself in a massive Pipe tube, perhaps her “deepest barrel out there ever,” as she told SURFER.

“I wasn’t really expecting a wave,” she continued. “There was like 100 people out there. It’s just hard to be in the spot. All of sudden that wave came, and I was in the perfect spot, and everyone was, like, ‘go Moana! That’s your wave!’ It turned out to be a really good wave.”

But, after the tube, Moana found herself in trouble.

She ended up looking for a second tube, but rather, she faceplanted into a sandbar.

“I nose pearled practically into dry sand,’ she said. “I broke my board, and I got so smoked. But I actually didn’t even care. I wasn’t even worried. I just got such a good wave at Pipe, so I was like, ‘I’m fine. I’m not gonna die on the sandbar.’”

Luckily, however, she didn’t spend too much time in the sandbar spin cycle. The lifeguards were nearby – specifically 2023 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational winner Luke Shepardson – and Moana was picked up, rushed outta there, and brought to safety.

And she had one helluva story to tell.
