Hercule Poirot is returning to theaters, but this time he’s solving a supernatural mystery.
Kenneth Branagh’s beloved detective, created by mystery novelist Agatha Christie, will hit the big screen this fall in A Haunting in Venice. The movie tracks the fallout of a spooky séance and casts a decidedly supernatural spin on the traditional Poirot mystery.
“It’s the kind of story that tries to create that knot-in-the-stomach sensation and is really such fun to see with a big crowd in a theater,” Branagh told The Hollywood Reporter. “So I’m super happy that we are releasing a story like this in theaters. So, in that sense, it’s a return to embracing the idea of scary stories, be it thrillers, horror or some kind of genre blend.”
The movie is the latest in Branagh’s series of Poirot films from 20th Century Studios. It’s a star-studded franchise and features familiar faces, including Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan and Michelle Yeoh. Things quickly go awry and a sheet is thrown over a body, offering a non-revealing glimpse of the deceased. Hercule Poirot shuts himself in the bathroom and looks down, only to glance back up and see a figure behind him. “Tonight we are all afraid,” he says in the trailer. “We cannot hide from our ghosts, whether they are real or not.”
The official trailer dropped on July 19 and gives us our first look at the full cast and plenty of shots of spooky Venetian alleyways.
