Watch as Meghan Markle Arrives to Cheering Crowds at the University of Johannesburg
The Duchess of Sussex was greeted with screams from students today as she arrived for her first public engagement in Johannesburg.
Young people studying at the University of Johannesburg lined up along a wall overlooking the entrance to catch a glimpse of the duchess as she made her way into the building. Screams and shouts went up as Meghan's car door opened, and she gave a wave to the students before going inside for a discussion on access to education.
“It’s exciting because she’s an inspiration to women. What happened to her, her story, it inspires people that anything can happen to you,” 20-year-old Hlengiwe Nhlapo, who is studying public relations and communications, told T&C.
She continued about Meghan: “I started watching her in Suits so I knew her from Suits. And my mom would always talk about Princess Diana, so I would always know about the royal family, would watch the weddings over the years. But actually seeing Meghan getting married to Harry was a big thing. I was at home in front of the TV and it was just so beautiful to watch.”
During her time in South Africa, Meghan has spoken out on the issue of violence against women and made a private visit to the memorial of murdered 19-year-old Uyinene Mrwetyana in Cape Town.
Hlengiwe said about the duchess's time in the country: “I feel like she’s very caring. With Uyinene, she went, she wanted to learn more about it. She called the mother...she cared, she came. She knew we were going through a rough time as a country with the whole femicide thing. And she showed her face, which means a lot.”
Faith Ghlamini, 22, from Cape Town, who is studying entrepreneurship, missed her finance class to catch a glimpse of Meghan, joking “this is commitment” about her dedication to seeing the duchess.
“She paves a path of thinking differently; you can do anything, you can be anything,” she said.
