Watch: Matt Bromley Dodges Sharks and Seaweed at an Obscure South African Slab

Matt Bromley is famous for chasing XL barrels all around the world.

But for "Slow Roast", he didn't need to travel far: Rather than fly halfway across the globe for a swell, he simply loaded up his car and headed out to his favorite Cape Town slabs.

Of course, just because these waves are in his backyard, doesn't make them easy. Cape Town is raw, rugged and (usually) cold. Not to mention the sharks, massive seaweed forests, and the distance from any sort of help if (or more likely when) things go wrong.

There's a reason only a few surfers are out.

As impressive as the surfing in the opening scene is: Bromley navigating steep and deep drops and a minefield of kelp at a beautiful left slab, it's Ian Thurtell — the filmer — that deserves even more credit.

It's one thing to surf that wave, but can you imagine swimming out into that kelp to capture the action? A sitting duck (ore more like seal) in an underwater forest?

Yeah, that'd be a hard pass for most.
