Watch Makana Pang Win $5000 in a Surf Contest He Didn’t Know He Was In
The Bum Rush Tour is a simple concept: Show up to a random beach unannounced, drop a few umbrellas in the sand, and start judging the surfers in the water. No scores. No priority. No interference calls or time limits or anything you’d expect from a normal surf contest. The winner is chosen whenever the Sun Bum judges feel someone is deserving of a chair up the beach and $5,000 cash.
The latest edition happened recently at the Ehukai Beach Park on Oahu during a winter day with some dredging sandbar slabs.
While previous Bum Rush Tour stops have crowned little-known surfers ruling their local wave, this time around, the Bum Rush crew was met with an all-star cast in the water, including Seth Moniz, Makana Pang, and Ivan Florence, to name a few.
At the end of the session, Pang packed the days biggest closeout, made one of the best spitters, and didn't burn anyone — enough to win the Bum Rush crown and the easiest 5k of his life.
"I actually came out here with Barron [Mamiya], before it started and not knowing this was gonna happen," says Pang after the win. "Whenever this sandbar appears we drop everything and just come out here all day long and get fried in the sun and get as barreled as we can."
Luckily for Pang, that 5k will buy him a whole lot of Sun Bum.
