Maui big wave surfer Paige Alms made history earlier this year as one of the first women to compete in the Eddie Aikau Invitational at Waimea Bay.

A few months later, she won the Red Bull Magnitude contest thanks to a monstrous wave at Jaws.

As winter approaches, she already knows what she wants from Jaws next. “I’m just preparing myself as best I possibly can because I want to get one of those huge big barrels that you can backdoor,” she told Surf Spendor’s David Scales in a new interview. “I already know what I have to do. It’s being in the perfect spot at the perfect time to get one.”

Surf Splendor captioned the nearly two-hour video above:

“2x Big Wave World Champ Paige Alms joins us to discuss the gift of her mother’s wanderlust, how restaurant work financed her surf career, the Jaws incident that necessitated a jet ski purchase, and the virtues of returning to a hunter-gather lifestyle. Enjoy!”

Click play on the video to hear Alms get deep about life, surfing, and gardening.

Here’s a fun fact we learned about her: She’s originally from Canada and ended up putting roots down in Maui after a long road trip through Australia with her seriously cool mom.

“It had always been my mom’s dream to travel around Australia, so we did,” said Alms.”We drove around the country in a van for ten months.”

That’s where Alms had her first lesson. Soon after, they moved to Maui and the rest, as they say, is history.

So check it out and learn more about her.
