Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated film Killers of the Flower Moon was easily a crown jewel of the fall awards season and brought the tragic history of the “culture of killing” Native Americans faced in 1920s Oklahoma to the big screen.

Adapted from journalist David Grann’s 2017 nonfiction book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the haunting drama takes place during the “reign of terror,” a period when members of the Osage Nation were targeted and killed after valuable oil was found on their tribal land. After years of Osage people calling for legitimate government intervention, the newly formed Federal Bureau of Investigation became involved, in what was one of the agency’s very first homicide investigations.

Lily Gladstone stars as Mollie Burkhart, a wealthy Osage woman whose husband, Ernest (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), is part of a scheme that sees many of her family members murdered for oil rights. Other members of the star-studded ensemble include Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser.

The film has garnered tons of buzz throughout this past year, as early reviews from the festival circuit have lauded Scorsese, DiCaprio, and Gladstone for career-best work. However, its three-hour, 36-minute run time means viewers also want to know when the Apple Studios–produced epic will arrive on streaming. Read on to learn how you can watch the monumental film.

Where to Watch

Following the film's theatrical release last fall, Killers of the Flower Moon will finally be available to stream on AppleTV+ on Friday, January 12. For anyone who wasn't willing to sit in a theater for the movie's near three hour runtime, it's your time! The service costs $7 per month after a seven-day free trial (Also, if you plan to buy a new Apple device any time soon, a number of them come with three months of the service free for new subscribers.)

For anyone who can't wait until then, the feature is currently available via video on demand for $19.99 on demand on most streaming services including AppleTV+, Prime Video, and Vudu.

When to Watch

Apple has yet to announce when Killers of the Flower Moon will arrive on Apple TV+, and it’s difficult to predict how long the film will be in theaters. While other movies distributed by Apple TV+, like Causeway and The Tragedy of Macbeth, have been released on the streamer just weeks after their theatrical debuts, Scorsese’s latest will likely spend more time in theaters, propelled by pure buzz and possibly the director’s public statements about wanting audiences to see his films on the big screen. (His 2020 film The Irishman arrived on Netflix after just three weeks, but that was a limited release due to some tension behind the scenes.)

If you are apprehensive about dedicating nearly four hours to the moviegoing experience (with no intermission), several early viewers—and Scorsese himself—have argued that Killers of the Flower Moon is made to be watched on a huge silver screen. Indeed, the full, chilling impact of this slice of American history deserves our full attention, and even the optimal streaming experience can come with distractions. Plus, the sooner you see the film, the sooner you’ll understand just what everyone is raving about.
