Watch: An Inside Look at ISA's African Training Program

Surfing Senegal has been on our radar since 1964 when The Endless Summer took us to the West African country.

Last April, the International Surfing Association held a surfing development program in Dakar, Senegal’s capital, for coaches and athletes including 11 boys and nine girls from 10 African countries. It was part of the Olympic Solidarity initiative aimed at supporting National Olympic Committees with the greatest need.

The kids received coaching and training from ISA certified professionals on a mission to “help them maximize their skill sets both in and out of the water.” Over the weekend, the ISA posted a video from the program.

The ISA captioned the clip:

"Hard to beat the stoke of these 20 young surfers who participated in the ISA African Youth Development Program. Thanks Olympic Solidarity for the support & partnership! 📸@diegoweisz @javipostigo"

The video shows the participants doing CrossFit like workouts, oceanside yoga, boat rides to the lineup, and surf-stoked kids wearing red jerseys boasting “isasurf” riding overhead rights on a glassy day.

According to the ISA, the program featured an in-depth overview of judging criteria, heat drills, mentor sessions with professional athletes and Olympians, functional movement and breathwork sessions, video analysis, and more to take a holistic approach to long-term athlete development.
