It's finally time to return to the castles of Westeros.
Three years after the global phenomenon Game of Thrones ended with its polarizing finale, HBO has revived the fantasy world through a prequel focusing on Daenerys Targaryen's ancestors. Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, the series is set nearly 200 years before the events of the original series, at a time where the Targaryens (and their platinum-blonde hairstyles) were at their most powerful, and their own familial discord was the biggest threat to their reign.
Though reception was mixed for the final seasons of Thrones, the new series is still highly-anticipated, with questions of whether the first franchise spinoff will reach the massive popularity of the original (or be enough of a hit to warrant the near $20 million per episode production cost). The series will introduce the ailing King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), who is forced to choose name either his daughter, Rhaenyra (first Milly Alcock, then Emma D'Arcy), or his younger brother, Daemon (Matt Smith), as heir to the kingdom, a conflict leads to a family civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

How to Watch
The series premiere airs on HBO this Sunday, August 21, at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST. Each episode is set to drop on HBO Max globally at the same time they air on cable. HBO Max can be accessed with monthly subscriptions starting at $10 for ad-supported streaming and going up to $15 for HD ad-free streaming.
